Balboa Naval Medical Center
San Diego, CA
Stronghold Engineering, Inc. served as the prime contractor for this $4.3 million design build project that called for construction of a 34,000 sf Comprehensive Combat Casualty Care Center. The center provides ambulatory care, occupational and physical therapy, ADL training, separate residential apartment, vocational counseling and advanced prosthetics support with a fully-equipped Gait Lab for combat-injured military personnel returning from the war in Iraq and other geographic locations where the United States military is currently serving.
The 3,500 sf courtyard space was reconfigured to serve as an Uneven Terrain training area. Intended to simulate “real world” environments, the area includes a three-story climbing wall; walking surfaces with varying textures and slopes, including rubber matting, cobblestone, sand and gravel; and other obstacles such as cast-in-place boulders.
This project earned Outstanding Accolades from the U.S. Department of the Navy and received the 2007 ABC San Diego Excellence in Construction Merit Award.
