Stronghold Engineering, Inc. served as the prime contractor for this project that called for conversion of the 50-year-old 4kV system to a modern 12kV system to meet the demands of the growing Riverside community. The existing subsurface system was replaced with primarily aboveground equipment to enable easier access for future repairs. A site-specific safety plan was developed and implemented to ensure zero safety incidents. Mandatory training was conducted on topics such as electrical safety, confined space, and lockout/tagout procedures. A qualified electrical worker was onsite to oversee all work performed on high voltage equipment and ensure safety, particularly during live-live work.
Setting vaults underground entailed climbing in and out of manholes, which meant that personnel needed to have proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Stronghold’s other safety measures included gas detection, ventilators and barricades to direct public traffic around the affected areas; this enabled workers to perform their jobs without interruption.
